Tension is rising in the aviation sector as FAAN plans to raise cargo tariffs by 257 per cent, a move industry operators say will hurt businesses nationwide.
Tension is brewing in the Nigerian aviation industry over the plan by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to increase cargo tariffs by 257 per cent. Findings revealed that, effective Monday, February 3, 2026, FAAN will raise the cargo handling charge from N7 per kilogramme to N25 per kilogramme, sparking concern among stakeholders across the sector.
Confirming the development in a telephone interview with The Guardian, the President of the Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON), Otunba Frank Ogunnojemite, said the planned increase has unsettled industry operators. He warned that the decision would further negatively impact cargo operations and other related businesses nationwide.
Ogunnojemite said the tariff hike runs contrary to the advice and objections raised by key stakeholders during engagements with FAAN management on the matter. He expressed concern that the move could worsen operating costs and disrupt the fragile balance within the aviation cargo value chain.
