Ex-president Jonathan safe, leaves Guinea-Bissau after coup

The Federal Government has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has departed Guinea-Bissau following a military coup that disrupted the country’s elections.

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is safe and has left Guinea-Bissau following the recent military coup that toppled the government, the Federal Government confirmed.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said, “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas.”

Jonathan had been leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission when the military seized power, prompting condemnation from both the African Union and ECOWAS observation heads, who emphasized the need to preserve peace and stability.

The Federal Government also denounced the coup, describing it as “an unconstitutional change of government in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau” and a violation of ECOWAS protocols, while the country gradually reopened its borders after a brief closure by the military.
