BENUE — Gunmen have assassinated Aondoakaa Yaiyol, the former Peoples Democratic Party chairman of Tarka Local Government and commander of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services (NHFSS).
The attack occurred Friday night. Yaiyol was shot at close range by assailants on a motorcycle. His killers fired sporadically as they fled, aided by two vehicles providing cover fire.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, PDP state spokesman Tim Nyior said, “It’s true that the man was once PDP chairman in Tarka LGA before his current position.”
Special Adviser to the governor on Security, Chief Joseph Har, described it as a targeted assassination. “Sketchy investigation shows that a criminal who earlier killed Yaiyol’s wife and was jailed had returned. Both had reportedly clashed before this killing.”
Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet confirmed the attack. “Officers trailed the suspect to his hideout, but he escaped. We’re closing in and will apprehend him soon,” Edet said.
Yaiyol’s wife was smilarly killed last year.
