Lawmaker alleges Boko Haram members found on army recruitment list

Former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase alleged during a House plenary that Boko Haram members were once found on the Nigerian Army recruitment list, warning that flawed recruitment processes are enabling criminals to infiltrate security institutions and worsen insecurity.

Former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase told a special House plenary that Boko Haram members were discovered on a Nigerian Army recruitment list, citing it as evidence of deep flaws allowing criminals into sensitive security institutions.

He said the issue, which former Defence Committee Chairman Muktar Betara could confirm, reflects systemic failures that have enabled terrorists to operate freely, noting he personally lost a brother and a cousin to insurgents.

Wase warned that some individuals benefit from ongoing chaos and urged politicians to recommend only people of integrity for recruitment, insisting that “Boko Haram members were found in the list of Army.”

He added that politicised indigeneship, rising kidnappings—with an estimated N5 billion paid in ransom in one year—and more than 30,000 Boko Haram deaths highlight a worsening security crisis that requires urgent and comprehensive reform.
