The EU has announced a new stockpiling strategy to prepare for crises, including war and health emergencies. Officials warn Europe must act now as threats escalate.
The European Commission has launched a sweeping stockpiling strategy to safeguard EU member states from future crises, including war, pandemics, and natural disasters.
Revealed Wednesday, the plan aims to build reserves of critical supplies such as food, fuel, medicine, and raw materials. It includes expanding EU-level stockpiles, coordinating with member states, and improving crisis logistics.
“We need a long-term strategy to make sure that essential supplies… are always available. The more we prepare, the less we panic,” said EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib.
The move comes amid a stark warning from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that Russia may pose a “credible military threat” to Europe and NATO within five years.
The initiative is part of the EU’s broader Preparedness Union, alongside a Medical Countermeasures Strategy to accelerate lifesaving tools.
The €800 billion plan reflects growing concern over Europe’s security and resilience, as the bloc seeks to reduce reliance on the US and fortify itself against threats ranging from war to wildfires.
