Enugu power commission reduces Band A tariff to N160/kWh

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has reduced the Band A electricity tariff for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited from N209/kWh to N160/kWh.

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has reduced the Band A electricity tariff for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited from N209/kWh to N160/kWh. The new rate, effective August 1, follows a cost-reflective review under Enugu’s 2023 Electricity Law, which gives the state power to regulate its own electricity market.

“This law, signed by Governor Peter Mbah… is pursuant to the 2023 Constitutional Amendment,” the commission stated.

EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo explained that “we reviewed their entire costs… to get an average price of N94,” attributing the low rate to federal subsidies on generation.

He added, “Band A, at N160 will help MainPower to manage the rate shock.”

Monitoring systems have been put in place to ensure service compliance. Okonkwo warned that the N160 rate may be unsustainable if federal subsidies are removed, but assured that “Ndi Enugu – Band A customers” will benefit from the reduced tariff starting August 1.
