EKSUTH doctor dismissed over alleged unlawful kidney removal

The Ekiti State Government has dismissed a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for allegedly removing a patient’s kidney without consent. This decision followed an investigation into a complaint by Joshua Afolayan. Commissioner for Health, Oyebanji Filani, confirmed the dismissal, noting the government’s commitment to upholding professional standards and protecting the lives of its citizens.

The government stated: “The surgeon who had primary responsibility for the surgery is to be dismissed from the service of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) with immediate effect.” Additionally, all surgical team members present during the operation face a one-month suspension pending further review. A comprehensive reorganization of EKSUTH departments is planned to strengthen clinical governance and patient safety.

To support the victim, the state pledged to cover all medical expenses. The statement confirmed: “The Ekiti State Government will bear the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr Joshua Afolayan and will also take responsibility for his post-transplant care.” This coverage includes two years of medical maintenance as the government seeks to restore public trust in the healthcare system.
