Egbetokun resigns as IGP, 29 DIGs, AIGs face retirement

At least 29 senior police officers may retire following the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, while former IGP Kayode Egbetokun resigned citing family reasons.

No fewer than 29 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force are likely to retire following the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police. It was gathered that those expected to exit the Force include eight Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and 21 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) who were promoted before Disu became an AIG. In line with police tradition, when a subordinate is appointed IGP, senior officers who previously outranked him may be affected.

Sources said former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act, was asked to resign on Monday evening after a meeting at the Presidential Villa. His resignation paved the way for Disu’s emergence as Acting IGP.

Confirming the development, the Presidency said Egbetokun stepped down due to personal reasons. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said, “The IGP resigned in a letter today (Tuesday), citing family issues which require his undivided attention.”
