A pedestrian was struck and killed by a lorry while attempting to cross the Ojota Expressway instead of using the nearby pedestrian bridge.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong warning to pedestrians against crossing expressways unlawfully after a fatal accident at Ojota over the weekend.
A statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a lorry while attempting to cross the Ojota Expressway instead of using the nearby pedestrian bridge.
The lorry driver, who fled the scene, lost control and collided with a Toyota Corolla (LND 905 HN) before being apprehended by LASTMA officials. He was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as “tragic and wholly preventable,” stressing the need for citizens to use the pedestrian infrastructure.
“It is both reckless and unlawful to ignore the provisions made for safety,” he said, calling for collective responsibility and vigilance to avoid further tragedies.
The victim’s body was released to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit.
