Dr. Nwandu, aunt of Adichie’s son alleges “severe breaches” in hospital care, contradicts Euracare’s statement

The controversy surrounding the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old son has escalated after a detailed rebuttal from the child’s aunt, Dr. Anthea Esege Nwandu, who alleges multiple, severe breaches of international medical standards by Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital. In a press release dated January 11, 2026, the dual board-certified physician directly challenged the hospital’s account, asserting it contained falsehoods and glaring inconsistencies regarding the care preceding the toddler’s death.

Dr. Nwandu systematically contested Euracare’s claims, stating the child was not treated at two prior paediatric centres as the hospital indicated, and forcefully rejected its assertion that care followed established protocols. She listed critical lapses, including, “International standards demand that a child on oxygen who is given sedation must have continuous oxygen therapy. Did Euracare do this? No!” She further alleged a complete absence of continuous monitoring for oxygen, pulse, and respiration, and criticized the physical handling of the sedated child, asking, “Is it international standard for an anesthesiologist to carry a child post-sedation on his shoulder… with absolutely no monitoring?… No.” Euracare has stated it is reviewing the matter as scrutiny intensifies.
