Don’t insult Nigerians, resign – ADC to INEC Chairman, Amupitan

The ADC has demanded the immediate resignation of INEC Chairman Professor Amupitan over alleged partisan social media posts and attempts to alter digital records, vowing to sustain civil disobedience until he leaves office.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Amupitan, following allegations of political partisanship. In a statement by party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC cited the emergence of a 2023 pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu social media post allegedly linked to the Chairman as a significant breach of the commission’s neutrality. The party argued that these links undermine public confidence and the credibility of the nation’s electoral umpire.

Further fueling the demand for resignation are allegations that attempts were made to alter digital records to conceal the Chairman’s past political affiliations. The ADC described these purported actions as a direct threat to transparency and accountability, asserting that an electoral umpire must remain impartial in both action and perception. The party warned that the Chairman’s continued stay in office sets a “dangerous precedent” and constitutes an insult to the Nigerian electorate.

In response to the development, the ADC has announced plans to update its petitions to foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The party also vowed to intensify civil disobedience actions across the country until Professor Amupitan vacates his position. Meanwhile, INEC has reportedly disowned the partisan posts credited to the Chairman, though the ADC remains firm in its demand for a leadership change to safeguard democratic standards.
