Customer complaints mount against Temu in Nigerian Market

Chinese e-commerce platform Temu is facing growing distrust and a surge of complaints from Nigerian customers over its products and services, according to a recent survey by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Chinese e-commerce platform Temu is facing mounting scrutiny from Nigerian consumers just months after entering the local market. A survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos revealed a wave of mixed reactions to the platform’s services, with complaints ranging from substandard products to allegedly misleading promotions.

Temu, which launched in Nigeria in November 2024, entered the market with an aggressive marketing strategy and low prices. Its direct-from-manufacturer model promised affordable goods and free shipping—features that initially attracted many Nigerian shoppers.

Temu’s business model—cutting out middlemen to offer factory-direct prices—initially attracted Nigerian shoppers. Some, like Imani (TikTok user), praised its efficiency: “Most items arrived as expected, and refunds for faulty products were quick.” Oluwatomiwa (Nairaland) also noted satisfaction but warned buyers to “check product details carefully to avoid miniature versions.”

However, many reported disappointing experiences. Funmi, a Lagos resident, told NAN: “The dresses I received were far worse than advertised.” Others, like Pray4meJC (Nairaland), shared absurd mishaps: “I paid ₦130,000 for a ‘standing fan’ that turned out to be a toy.”

Complaints also surfaced about Temu’s “free gift” promotions, which some customers labeled deceptive. “You need to buy goods worth N30,000 before you can check out,” said one TikTok user. Another reported receiving a toy microwave instead of a real one.

In response, Temu stated it takes customer feedback seriously, maintains quality checks, and is still adapting to local preferences. “We enforce strict standards… and work with globally recognized testing agencies,” the company told NAN.

Temu added it aims to build a trustworthy and affordable shopping experience in Nigeria as it grows its presence in the market.
