Court sentences Osinachi’s husband to death by hanging

Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, presiding over the case in Wuse Zone 2, delivered the judgment Monday, rejecting Nwachukwu’s no-case submission and convicting him of culpable homicide over his wife’s April 8, 2022 death.

Nwachukwu, arraigned on June 3, 2022, faced 23 charges, including homicide, spousal battery, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.

The prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imana, called 17 witnesses — including two of the deceased’s children — and submitted 25 exhibits. The defence presented four witnesses.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Following pleas for leniency from defence counsel Reginald Nwali, the court upheld the death sentence on Count 1. Nwachukwu also received additional jail terms and N700,000 in fines.
