The Nigeria Police Force has warned protesters, including those seeking Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release, against demonstrations near Aso Rock and other key Abuja landmarks, citing a Federal High Court order that restricted protests in those areas.
The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to intending protesters, including those agitating for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and activists like Omoyele Sowore, against staging demonstrations near Aso Rock and other key government buildings in Abuja.
The warning, delivered by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, is based on a Federal High Court order issued on October 17. The court, in the suit Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others, restrained protests around the Aso Rock Villa, National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
CSP Hundeyin stated: “The order restrains the respondents and any other persons or groups acting under their instruction from staging protests within and around Aso Rock Villa and its environs.” He advised protesters to avoid the restricted areas and refrain from any act “capable of provoking confrontation or disturbing public order,” warning that those who incite violence or breach the order will be “dealt with decisively” and prosecuted, with digital evidence to be used against those inciting others online.
The Inspector-General of Police has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police to ensure strict enforcement and maintain strategic deployments to protect residents.
