The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver involved in the December 29 accident that killed two of former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s friends, but the case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.
Kayode, 46, appeared before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday following his arrest and treatment for minor injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred near Danco along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident claimed the lives of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen, while Joshua and Kayode survived with minor injuries. Police sources said the Lexus SUV, driven by Kayode, was allegedly traveling above the 65mph speed limit when a tyre burst during an overtaking manoeuvre, causing the vehicle to crash into an illegally parked truck carrying soya beans.
Authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing, including efforts to locate the truck driver, who has reportedly fled the scene. “The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and was then taken to the state police headquarters for questioning. He is in a stable condition and was able to provide us with his version of events that led up to the crash,” a police source said.
Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit, and he, along with his mother, paid respects to the deceased friends whose bodies were flown to London for burial.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, as well as President Bola Tinubu, expressed support for Joshua and commiserated with the families of the victims.
The next court hearing on January 20 is expected to clarify the charges against Kayode and reveal further details from the ongoing investigation.
