COUP: Military seizes power in Benin Republic, dissolves government

Military officers in Benin Republic have announced the overthrow of the federal government, declaring control during a broadcast on state television on Sunday.

The group, calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, stated that President Patrice Talon and all political officeholders have been removed, with all state institutions dissolved. Talon, who has been in power since 2016, had planned to leave office after the April 2026 presidential election.

The announcement has plunged the country into political uncertainty, raising concerns about governance and stability in the West African nation.

The military group did not provide a timeline for restoring civilian rule or holding elections, leaving citizens and international observers awaiting further details on the country’s political future.
