Coup: Families of detained officers beg Tinubu for mercy

Families of 16 detained military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu are appealing to the Presidency for mercy as investigations continue.

Family members of the 16 detained military officers accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu are calling on the Presidency and other relevant authorities to show leniency, Weekend Trust has learnt. The families are reportedly reaching out to top political and government functionaries at the seat of power to prevail on the president to temper justice with mercy.

It was gathered that the relatives have intensified efforts through back-channel engagements, seeking intervention from influential figures within government circles. According to sources, the families are appealing for compassion, citing the careers and years of service of the detained officers as grounds for clemency.

Weekend Trust had earlier reported exclusively that no fewer than 16 military officers were indicted in a report submitted to the president following investigations into the alleged coup plot. The officers are currently being held as authorities continue to probe the matter.
