Colourful processions as Eyo festival kicks off in Lagos

The iconic Eyo festival, known as the Adamu Orisha Play, commenced Saturday with vibrant processions at Tafawa Balewa Square. This 2025 edition marks a historic return for the cultural spectacle, which was last held in 2017. Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the rhythmic chants and energetic dances that define this deeply rooted Yoruba traditional celebration.

President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu are expected to attend the festivities as distinguished guests. They will join Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat to celebrate the event’s famous white-clad masquerades. The festival remains a premier national treasure, showcasing the unique symbolism and rich history of the Lagos Island community.

Ahead of the processions, Governor Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History. The monument is described as a “powerful symbol of Lagos heritage” and is intended to bolster cultural tourism and economic growth. This addition underscores the state’s commitment to preserving its legacy while enriching educational development through tradition.
