Cold water and its impact on your health

Research shows cold water can trigger headaches, worsen congestion, and even cause blood pressure spikes in some people.

Cold water is refreshing, especially on a hot day, but experts caution it may not always be the healthiest option.

According to Verywell Health, drinking chilled water has been linked to five possible health concerns. First, it may worsen congestion during colds by slowing mucus flow, with studies showing hot liquids like tea or broth provide more relief. Second, research has connected cold water to headaches and migraines, with women twice as likely to experience pain if they had a history of migraines.

Cold water may also slow digestion and reduce appetite, which can be harmful for children, the elderly, or patients needing calories. For people with swallowing disorders like achalasia, it can worsen spasms, while warm water helps. Finally, cold water can cause a temporary spike in blood pressure, posing risks for people with hypertension.

Experts recommend warm or room-temperature fluids for those with underlying health issues.
