When I said that Christian leaders in this country should be at the forefront of debunking the outright lie of “Christian persecution in Nigeria,” it was never because I felt Islam, my religion, is being accused of atrocities. Rather, I said it because I sincerely believe that as Nigerians, regardless of faith, we must not allow outsiders to exploit our differences and create further pain and suffering in this our beloved country.
Unfortunately, the propaganda is now gaining international traction because the right voices have not stood up to firmly challenge these dangerous lies being circulated by obvious paid influencers. This morning, I came across a post by U.S. Senator @SenTedBuddNC calling the U.S. government to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. Similarly, Canadian MP @AndrewScheer has taken the same issue to the Canadian parliament.
While the Nigerian government has officially addressed and refuted these baseless accusations, the question remains, why are those who should be speaking are not speaking? Why are they leaving room for outsiders to misrepresent our reality? This propaganda, if left unchallenged, will not harm only Muslims, it will hurt the entire country. And truthfully, both we Muslims and Christians in this country know that there is no Christian persecution going on, as the Western world is trying so hard to paint. We may have challenges as a nation, but they are not about one religion hunting down another.
Here, I must commend Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode @realFFK, @RenoOmokri, @iyaboawokoya and many others for boldly refusing to be silent, even while facing heavy attacks and insults for their stance.
