The release of bandit leader Abdu Lankai in Katsina State has eased fears of renewed violence and safeguarded a fragile peace process in Jibia.
Abdu Lankai, a prominent bandit leader captured by a rival group loyal to notorious kingpin Bello Turji, has been released, local reports confirmed. Lankai, who played a key role in brokering a peace deal in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, was instrumental in its implementation, and his release has reportedly reassured residents who feared renewed violence. For six days, the community lived under tension, with markets closing early, restricted movement, and families uncertain about their safety.
“At that time, nobody slept with both eyes closed. We were afraid that if anything happened to Lankai, the whole peace process would collapse,” a resident, who pleaded anonymity, told Daily Trust. Once known for his involvement in banditry, Lankai has recently emerged as a key intermediary between armed groups and the local community, helping maintain stability in the area.
Locals said his release is likely to prevent a resurgence of violence and preserve the fragile truce. Authorities and community members continue to monitor the situation to ensure that peace is maintained and that the intermediary role played by Lankai continues to facilitate dialogue between armed groups and residents.
