CCB to Nigerians: Report public servants living beyond their means

“If you suspect someone is living above their means, you don’t need their declaration. Report the person, and we will investigate.”

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) says Nigerians should report public officials whose lifestyles exceed their known incomes, promising confidentiality and accountability.

Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Abdullahi Bello, has urged Nigerians to report public servants whose lifestyles appear inconsistent with their earnings.

Speaking to Daily Trust, Bello revealed plans to launch a public-facing platform to submit such complaints.

“One of the first things I did upon assumption of duty was to establish a forensic accounting and financial investigation unit within the bureau,” he said.

The unit examines asset declarations of public officials for unexplained wealth. “If there is a significant increase in net worth that cannot be justified by their income, they are invited to explain,” he said, adding that several officials, including high-profile individuals, are under review.

He encouraged anonymous reports, stating: “If you suspect someone is living above their means, you don’t need their declaration. Report the person, and we will investigate.”

Bello also disclosed plans for a whistleblower protection bill, affirming, “False or omitted declarations are serious offences.”
