AuntieEsther, cancer patient who refused blood transfusion, passes away

Social media personality and cancer patient Mensah Omolola, popularly known as AuntieEsther, has died. Her passing was confirmed on Saturday by media personality #AUNTYMUSE_, who supported her throughout her treatment journey. Fellow users expressed sadness, with one tweeting, “Unfortunately, we lost Aunty Esther. Very Sad!” and #AUNTYMUSE_ adding, “May her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏.”

AuntieEsther had garnered nationwide attention after rejecting a blood transfusion recommended by doctors for her cancer treatment, citing her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. Her case prompted Nigerians to donate over ₦30 million to support her medical care, coordinated largely by charity advocate Wisdom Obi-Dickson, known as #Wizarab10, who announced ₦30.7 million had been raised as of December 1, 2025.

Earlier, AuntieEsther had disclosed that her cancer was confined to her breast and armpit areas. She explained that doctors recommended chemotherapy but advised improving her blood levels first. “My organs inside fine. Doc say she want to start chemotherapy but I go take injection,” she wrote, emphasizing that she and her family opted for treatment methods avoiding transfusion.

The decision to refuse transfusion stirred controversy, as Obi-Dickson noted that her church warned of possible disciplinary action if she accepted blood. He said doctors offered two options: transfusion-supported treatment within the donated funds or a longer, more expensive alternative without transfusion. “Though it will take longer and cost more, we have to respect her religious beliefs,” he stated. Online debate arose over the use of donated funds versus respecting her medical choices.
