Canada has shortened study permit validity for international students completing prerequisite courses, requiring them to apply for a new permit before starting their main programmes
The Canadian government has reduced the validity period of study permits issued to international students, including Nigerians, who must complete prerequisite courses before beginning their main academic programmes. Updated guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada states that permits for preparatory studies will now be valid only for the duration of the course plus an additional 90 days.
The policy means affected students must apply for a new study permit after completing prerequisite programmes, though those applying from within Canada may continue studying under maintained status while their applications are processed. Authorities said the revision is aimed at speeding up transitions into primary programmes as part of broader immigration reforms, including updates to the 2026 Express Entry system and new work-experience requirements.
