Borno women sensitised on early cancer detection by MWAN and NEDC

“Early detection of lumps would enable prompt care and treatment before cancer develops or spreads,” said Dr. Anna Peter, MWAN President.

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Borno Chapter, in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), has sensitised women and adolescent girls in Borno State on the importance of conducting regular breast self-examinations.

Speaking at an event to mark World Cancer Awareness Month in Maiduguri, MWAN President, Dr. Anna Peter, urged women to report any abnormal bleeding or discharge after intercourse to health facilities for prompt management.

A consultant, Dr. Usman Samuel Nganjuwa of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, demonstrated how women can privately perform self-examinations to detect abnormalities early. “This year alone, I managed six men in this center. Some of them have passed on but some are still alive,” he said.

NEDC State Coordinator, Mohammed Umar, represented by Abdulrahman Ali Abdu, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to health advocacy and empowerment.

The event also featured a marathon walk from UMTH to the University of Maiduguri.
