Armed bandits, suspected to be operating from the Kainji Lake National Park, attacked a village market in Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, on January 4, 2026. During the attack, the bandits set the market ablaze, looted food items, and fired shots at villagers. Over 30 people were reportedly killed in the assault, and many others were abducted by the assailants, who then fled toward the dense Kainji Lake National Park forest. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack, stating that joint security teams had been dispatched to the scene and were working on rescuing the kidnapped victims.
The police spokesman added that efforts were ongoing to trace and apprehend the bandits responsible for the attack. “Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, some persons were also kidnapped,” said Abiodun, emphasizing that the security forces were committed to restoring peace in the area. As of now, the identities of the victims and the exact number of those kidnapped remain unknown, but the attack has left the local community in shock and grief. Security measures in the region have been heightened as authorities continue their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
