Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been appointed acting Supreme Leader of Iran as part of a three-member interim council pending the selection of a permanent successor.
Alireza Arafi has been appointed as Iran’s acting Supreme Leader following his election as a jurist member of the Guardian Council within the country’s Leadership Council, according to ISNA. The move comes after the death of Ali Khamenei, with the Expediency Discernment Council confirming Arafi’s role in the three-member interim body responsible for overseeing leadership duties.
The 67-year-old cleric will serve alongside Masoud Pezeshkian and Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei on the Interim Council until the Assembly of Experts selects a substantive successor. The Leadership Council is mandated by law to manage the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader during the transition period.
