The Ogun State Police have invited several kingmakers and a former governorship aspirant for questioning over allegations that the selection process for the next Awujale of Ijebuland was compromised by bribery.
The Ogun State Police Command has summoned key kingmakers, including the Olisa of Ijebu Ode, Chief Rasheed Adesanya, and Otunba Jimi Lawal, over allegations of bribery and financial inducement. The invitation follows a suspension of the selection process for the new Awujale of Ijebuland amid public protests and claims that the revered throne was being sold to the highest bidder.
In letters signed by DCP Gboyega Adeoye, the police described the move as a fact-finding mission to advance criminal justice and fairness. The authorities emphasized their constitutional mandate to investigate, stating, “Your presence is therefore required to assist in advancing the course of Criminal Justice delivery and fairness.” The probe seeks to clarify if candidates used illicit funds to influence the kingmakers’ decision.
