Arsenal plan £500m Emirates expansion, eye temporary Wembley move

Arsenal are exploring a £500m expansion of the Emirates Stadium that could see the club temporarily relocate home matches to Wembley.

Arsenal are planning a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium that could temporarily move their home matches to Wembley, as the club seeks to increase capacity beyond 70,000.

According to The Telegraph, detailed plans have been drawn up to remodel the 60,700-seater stadium, which would make it the largest football ground in London, surpassing West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur. The project, expected to cost around £500m, would involve reconfiguring stands and seating arrangements while keeping the stadium’s outer design largely intact.

The expansion aims to address a season ticket waiting list exceeding 100,000 and significantly boost matchday revenue. “Discussions with architects have been positive about the potential to expand within the existing footprint,” the report said. Arsenal’s Kroenke family owners, who have invested heavily since 2018, are expected to lead the project with their experience from developing major sports venues, including the $5.5bn SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

If approved, the work could coincide with the 20th anniversary of Arsenal’s move from Highbury in 2006. Wembley remains the most likely temporary venue, as Arsenal previously hosted Champions League fixtures there between 1998 and 2000. The redevelopment, still at the planning stage, would mark one of the club’s most ambitious projects since the Emirates’ construction nearly two decades ago.
