Another Lagos fire incident destroys four shops in Ikotun on New Year’s Day

Four shops dealing in electronics were gutted by fire in the early hours of New Year’s Day at Ikotun, Lagos State, destroying all items within the affected premises, Vanguard News reports. The shops, located in a building beside the GUO Transport Company park in Ikotun, were said to contain items such as washing machines, television sets and power generators, according to information gathered by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

A resident living near the building told NAN that neighbours made efforts to stop the fire from spreading by using large quantities of water before the Lagos State Fire Service arrived. He commended the firefighters for their swift response, saying, “If not for their timely intervention, the whole building would have burnt and the fire would have affected our own.” While the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, he suspected a faulty electrical circuit, adding that the area was cordoned off and no casualty was recorded, as NAN also noted that similar fire incidents had recently affected the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Lagos Island and the Army Arena Market in Oshodi.
