Anglican Bishop petitions Navy over alleged assault on priest

The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Ogbaru, Rt Rev Prosper Amah, has petitioned the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, over an alleged assault on Revd Tochukwu Agina by a naval officer at a checkpoint in Okpotouno, Anambra State. The bishop stated in a letter dated December 2 that the priest was assaulted “under a false allegation that he was making a phone call at the checkpoint,” insisting that “credible eyewitness accounts and the victim’s testimony confirm that the priest was not making any call.”

Describing the act as a violation of human rights and military ethics, he urged the Navy to conduct an independent investigation, discipline the officer involved, communicate with the affected family, provide compensation, and implement measures to prevent future incidents, noting that the Navy’s uniform “symbolises honour, discipline, and service — not intimidation or oppression.”
