Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has announced that he will still donate $500,000 to the Super Eagles of Nigeria despite the team’s loss to Morocco in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Nigeria were eliminated on Wednesday after losing 4–2 on penalties to the hosts, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes. Misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved costly in the shootout.
Prior to the encounter, Rabiu had pledged to reward the Eagles with $500,000 if they defeated Morocco, with an additional $50,000 promised for each goal scored. However, in a post on X after the match, the businessman said he would still fulfil the pledge, describing the donation as a “token of appreciation” and “in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you have brought to our nation”.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” Rabiu said.
