Nestlé infant formulae approved in Nigeria safe for consumption – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reassured Nigerians, particularly parents and caregivers, that all Nestlé infant formulae approved for sale in the country are safe for consumption.

In a statement issued on Monday, the agency’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, said the approved products marketed in Nigeria were not affected by the voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK across more than 50 countries.

“The approved infant formulae marketed in Nigeria are not part of the voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK,” Ms Adeyeye said, explaining that the recall was linked to the potential presence of cereulide, a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea and vomiting if ingested.

Ms Adeyeye noted that the SMA range sold in Nigeria is manufactured at the Nestlé Tuas Factory in Singapore and is duly registered with NAFDAC, listing the products as SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2, and SMA Gold 3, each with valid registration numbers.

She added that the agency had verified that SMA and NAN infant formulae produced for Nigeria were not among the affected batches recalled elsewhere, stressing that “the alert was issued purely as a precaution, in line with our duty to keep Nigerians informed of global food safety concerns.”

While warning that risks from unauthorised imports and online purchases could not be entirely ruled out, she said NAFDAC maintains strict oversight through routine surveillance and post-market monitoring, urging Nigerians to rely only on verified information from the agency and to report any suspected sales of recalled products.
