The Federal Government has announced that mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions to study arts and humanities.
The Federal Government has removed mathematics as a mandatory subject for admission into tertiary institutions for students in arts and humanities.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Federal Ministry of Education said the revised National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions aim to “remove barriers while maintaining academic standards.”
“The new framework applies to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide,” said ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo.
Under the new rule, mathematics remains compulsory only for science, technology, and social science courses. Arts and humanities students will now need a minimum of five credits, including English Language, in relevant subjects.
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa described the move as a deliberate effort to expand access to tertiary education.
An education analyst, Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, called it “a brilliant reform that will improve the ease of admissions for more seekers.”
