A compliance audit by the Office of the Auditor-General has uncovered financial mismanagement in the Nigeria Police Force’s handling of the 2023 Safe School Intervention Fund. The report, addressed to IGP Kayode Egbetokun, revealed ₦2.9bn was paid to contractors for ICT projects without mandatory NITDA clearance, while ₦189.5m lacked proof of execution.
Auditors demanded the recovery of ₦3.1bn, citing “systemic violations of financial regulations”. The findings spotlight weak internal controls in the police force, now under scrutiny for accountability lapses.
The Auditor-General’s 2025 report flagged a ₦9.48bn contract awarded to Vigiscope Limited, revealing ₦186.3m in overpayments due to inflated tax and undeducted stamp duty. The audit attributed the errors to “breakdowns in internal control,” urging corrective measures. Separately, ₦2.9bn was spent on ICT procurement without NITDA approval, violating federal guidelines. The IGP was directed to remit all irregular funds to the treasury.
