Thirty-one members of the United States Congress have applauded President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over the alleged persecution of Christians
Thirty-one members of the United States Congress have commended President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a move they described as necessary to confront “a growing Christian genocide” in the West African nation, according to PUNCH reporting.
The commendations were contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by House Values Action Team Chairman Rep. Robert Aderholt. The lawmakers asserted that the action gave “hope to the people of Nigeria” and signaled a strong U.S. commitment to defending religious freedom.
Congressman Aderholt stated: “President Trump’s commitment to end the Christian genocide in Nigeria and his designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern gives hope to the people of Nigeria. This persecution of Christians must end.” Other lawmakers, including Grand Old Party Chair Lisa McClain, described the situation as “a moral outrage and a crime against humanity,” with some expressing support for sanctions.
Rep. Chris Smith noted that Trump’s decision restored the 2020 CPC designation that was “unjustifiably” lifted by the Biden administration. However, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, dismissed the U.S. position as resulting from a “flawed understanding” and “misrepresentation and misinformation” of the nation’s security realities.
