23 dead, including tourists, after blaze rips through popular Indian nightclub

At least 23 dead (4 tourists, 19 staff) and 50 injured after a massive blaze triggered by a cylinder blast at a nightclub in Arpora, North Goa late Saturday night.

At least 23 people died in the Indian state of Goa after a fire broke out at a popular nightclub in Arpora village around 12 a.m. local time on Sunday, Dec. 7. The blaze, which authorities confirmed was caused by a gas canister explosion, claimed the lives of both staff and tourists. Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the tragedy, writing on X: “Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people.”

Three victims died from burn injuries, while the remainder died from suffocation. Police reported the fire was concentrated around the ground floor kitchen. Director General of Police Shri Alok Kumar noted the location “[suggests] that the victims were employed at the club.” Chief Minister Sawant immediately ordered an inquiry into the incident, adding, “Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law — any negligence will be dealt with firmly.”
