Delays in amending the Electoral Act have heightened fears that the 2027 elections may be postponed or conducted under the existing 2022 law, sparking concern among stakeholders.
Fears over the 2027 general elections intensified as the House of Representatives stepped down consideration of the Electoral Act amendment bill, raising concerns the polls may be postponed or held under the 2022 law. Civil society groups and opposition parties warned that delays by the National Assembly could disrupt INEC’s statutory timetable.
With the Senate committee expected to submit its report, stakeholders cautioned that failure to amend the law promptly could invalidate proposed reforms, including new election dates and procedures. INEC is required to issue election notices by February 24 under the current law, leaving little room for legislative delays.
