The Presidency has reacted to the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying he is likely to emerge as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report from Daily Post Nigeria, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Obi’s move mirrors events leading up to the 2019 elections, when he served as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Onanuga said he watched Obi formally join the ADC after abandoning the Labour Party, which he described as the platform used to pursue an “ill-fated presidential ambition.”
He also questioned Obi’s leadership credentials, adding, “Obi is so blind that he cannot see all these achievements, as he jumped from Labour to ADC, where he will play second fiddle and end up being Atiku’s running mate in 2027, like we witnessed in 2019.” Obi officially dumped the Labour Party on Wednesday in Enugu alongside other Southeast leaders.
