2027: INEC chairman must resign, can’t deliver credible poll — Olawepo-Hashim

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has urged INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to resign, alleging the revised 2027 election timetable oversteps the commission’s powers and favours the APC.

Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, over the recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Saturday, Olawepo-Hashim described the adjustment of party primary dates as an overreach of INEC’s constitutional powers, alleging it was structured to favour the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He argued that while INEC can fix general election dates and submission deadlines, it lacks authority to dictate when parties conduct primaries, warning that failure to reconstitute the commission could undermine the credibility of the 2027 polls. The electoral body, however, maintains that the revised timetable is necessary to ensure compliance with the Electoral Act and orderly preparations for the elections.
