Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has sparked a political firestorm by vowing to resign his office if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the state in the 2027 presidential election.
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has issued a high-stakes political challenge, declaring that he will resign from his position if President Bola Tinubu does not emerge victorious in the state during the 2026/2027 general elections. Speaking on Friday during an interview on Africa Independent Television (AIT), the Governor expressed absolute confidence in the President’s appeal to the Edo electorate. He argued that the current administration’s infrastructure projects and developmental strides in the state would serve as a “silent campaigner,” ensuring a landslide victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the next national polls.
Addressing critics of his administration and the federal government, Okpebholo stated that the people of Edo would demonstrate their gratitude to the President through their ballots. He emphasized that his confidence stems from a grassroots-oriented political strategy rather than reliance on electoral violence. “The various projects across the state are the things that will speak for Tinubu and he will win here. Bet me, if he doesn’t win, I will resign as governor,” Okpebholo stated. He further noted: “There’s no election here for him. I’m a politician, who under-studied Chief Aneni. My style of politics is not thuggery but grassroots.”
The Governor’s bold assertion comes amid intensifying political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 cycle, as parties begin to consolidate their bases in the South-South region. Okpebholo maintained that the era of political godfatherism in Edo has been replaced by a focus on “tangible impacts” that directly benefit the common man. Asserting that the opposition would be caught off guard by the President’s popularity, he concluded: “Edo people have not even thanked Tinubu. How they will thank him is through their votes.”
