12 Nigerians rescued, one dead, five missing in S/Africa boat mishap

Twelve Nigerians were rescued, one confirmed dead and five remain missing after a Nigerian tugboat sank in stormy waters off South Africa.

Twelve Nigerians have been rescued after a Nigerian tugboat, LEO, sank in South African waters late Saturday night, leaving one person confirmed dead and five others missing. The vessel, which was carrying 18 people and had travelled to South Africa for repairs, reportedly ran aground about 18 nautical miles offshore in stormy conditions between Cape Town and Durban while returning to Lagos.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, said South African authorities confirmed the rescue of 12 survivors, who are being transported to Port Elizabeth to be received by officials of the Nigerian High Commission. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as efforts continue to locate the five missing persons.
